SIBC students investigate how societies can leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to promote social good while mitigating potential risks to democratic stability, security, and labor markets. At the macro level, we explore policy options that governments can implement to ensure ethical safeguards, facilitate workforce transitions, and foster public trust in AI technologies. As part of our analysis, we evaluate the AI strategies of two firms, examining their approaches to responsible AI deployment and social impact. We identify strengths and weaknesses in these strategies and propose enhancements to increase their effectiveness in promoting societal benefit while minimizing risks.

“This semester, I had the opportunity to serve as the project leader for the IPE Forum hosted at the University of San Diego. Our team was tasked with evaluating the impact of artificial intelligence and exploring how it can be used to benefit society while mitigating its potential risks to democratic security, economic stability, and labor markets. As this was a complex and multifaceted project, the experience allowed me to strengthen my leadership skills by fostering collaboration, maintaining accountability, and motivating my team to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work. Through this process, I not only deepened my understanding of AI’s societal implications but also grew in my role as a servant leader, learning how to guide with purpose, empathy, and a shared vision for positive impact.”

“Through my participation on the IPE Forum, I was able to work with a team to research and understand the impacts of AI on society.  The IPE Forum further prepared me with presentation skills as well as the ability to collaborate with other classmates on a project.  This project not only helped me to understand the impacts of AI on society, but it also equipped me with an understanding of AI that I will be able to use in the future. The IPE Forum was an amazing opportunity for me to be able to work with others to learn more about AI as well as to present our research.”
