Accounting Team

The Accounting Team is a team that meets periodically throughout the year to address SIBC’s financial needs. The Accounting Team assures that SIBC is demonstrating effective stewardship of its donor’s generous gift. The team not only follows generally accepted business practices for overseeing expenditures but also initiates good systems for members to follow internally. Different needs addressed by the Accounting Team include coding transactions, booking flights and hotels for project needs, billings, reimbursements, predicting future months’ spending to increase credit limit per month, and approving spending budgets for project use.

I mainly joined SIBC because I was asked to be a part of the IPE team. When I learned I had to pick a second project, I decided to pick one where I would stay on campus, and I knew Claire Donahoe and Michael Whiteside well enough to where I could work with them. We made up the Accounting team. Our job was simple, count expenditures from the trips and events other teams were involved in. We created spreadsheets that could be easily read and recreated for the future.

The biggest take away from this project was that assignments will be thrown at you at random hours of the day. You need to be ready and willing to accept them as present themselves and complete them to the best of your ability, and the sooner you can do that, the better.

I have enjoyed leading the accounting team this year, and have been pleased with our progress. We have updated our accounting systems and have created a more easily comprehensible process. We have worked on budgets for each project, which has allowed us to have a broader view of our SIBC council. I hope that the work we have done to improve our processes will have a positive effect for future accounting team leaders. Thank you to our SIBC benefactors who make all these opportunities possible.
